## What each one actually is

A **star map** is a generated image of the night sky as it appeared from a given latitude and longitude at a given moment. You enter a date, a place and a caption, and software renders the constellations. Every one is technically accurate.

A **custom love map** is an illustration of your relationship laid out as a map: a road winding past the places that mattered, each labelled with its real name and date. Someone illustrates it from a brief you write.

## The honest case for the star map

It is genuinely a good product, and it wins on three things.

**It is cheap and instant.** You can have one in fifteen minutes for the price of a bottle of wine.

**It needs almost nothing from you.** A date and a city. If you are not confident writing a brief, or you are buying for someone whose story you only half know, this matters.

**It is graphically clean.** A circle of stars on a dark ground goes with any interior and does not need explaining.

## Where the star map falls down

The sky above a city on a given night was the same sky for everybody. Two couples married on the same day in the same city receive the same image with different captions on it. That is fine as decoration and thin as a keepsake, and it is the specific reason a lot of people give one and then quietly replace it a year later.

It also only encodes **one moment**. A first anniversary has a whole year of material in it, and a star map has room for a date.

## Where the love map falls down

Three real drawbacks, worth knowing before you order.

**It costs more,** because someone is drawing it rather than a script generating it.

**It needs a brief.** You have to sit down and write five to eight milestones with real place names and dates, plus a line about anything distinctive. That is twenty minutes of thinking, and the map is only as specific as that brief. A thin brief produces a generic map, which is the single most common way these go wrong.

**It is not instant.** A draft comes back within 3 days and the finished files in 4–5, which is quick for commissioned work, but it is not fifteen minutes.

## Which to choose

Choose the **star map** if:

- the gift is about one specific date and nothing else
- you are working with a small budget
- you do not know the relationship's history well enough to write a brief
- you want it in the next hour

Choose the **custom love map** if:

- the relationship has places in it, a city, a pub, a flat, a trip, a house
- you want something the recipient cannot have seen before
- you are marking a longer stretch than one night, such as a first, tenth or fiftieth anniversary
- you are willing to spend twenty minutes writing the brief
