Twentieth anniversary
20th anniversary gift ideas
In short
The twentieth is china traditionally and platinum in the modern list, with emerald green as its colour. Two decades is usually the first anniversary where the children are old enough to be part of the gift rather than just on it, which changes what works.

China and platinum say opposite things
China is fine, breakable and kept for special occasions. Platinum does not tarnish, bend or wear. The traditional and modern lists are making almost contradictory claims about a twenty-year marriage, and both are recognisable.
In practice most people take the platinum reading and buy something durable. The china reading is the more interesting one, though: twenty years in, the good china is the stuff you finally started using on ordinary Tuesdays.
What changes at twenty years
The children, if there are any, are teenagers or older. That is the practical difference from a tenth, and it reshapes the gift in two ways.
The gift can come from more than one person. A joint present from the whole family is normal at twenty, and it means the budget and the effort can be pooled.
The children have their own version of the story. Ask them what they remember and you get details the couple has forgotten: the car that broke down, the holiday nobody enjoyed, the year of the extension.
One delivered map covers exactly this shape of story: a couple who met online in 2005, married on a paddle steamer in Arizona, bought a house, and had five children, each drawn separately, ending on a twentieth anniversary cake. It works because the children are on it.
Ideas for twenty years
- An illustrated map of the two decades, with each child on it by name. Five to eight stops, so the children usually take two or three of them.
- A party rather than an object. Twenty is early for a formal party, which is exactly why one is a surprise.
- The platinum thing, if you follow the modern list. One good piece.
- A rebooked honeymoon, same destination, twenty years later.
- A written interview with both of them, conducted separately by their own children and printed side by side. Cheap, and devastating in the best way.
- China you will actually use. Not a display set.
Getting the details right
If the map is a family gift, do the interview first and do it separately. Both halves of a couple misremember dates, and the disagreements are usually the funniest part.
Send the five to eight stops in the order they happened. The map is a timeline, so the sequence is what the composition is built around, and it cannot be reshuffled later. How many to choose covers cutting twenty years down.
Files come back in 4 to 5 days at $49, and at twenty years it is worth printing large: 50 × 75 cm keeps every label readable across a room. Sizes and paper here.
Questions
Why is a love map a good paper anniversary gift?
The first wedding anniversary is traditionally marked with paper, and a printed map is literally paper, but it is paper with your own story on it rather than a card. That is why it is the shop’s most requested first-anniversary piece.
Does it only work for a first anniversary?
No. Maps have been made for 6th, 20th and 46th anniversaries, for engagements, elopements, weddings, Valentine’s Day, and as gifts from adult children to their parents and grandparents. Longer stories tend to make richer maps.
Can I include something that has not happened yet?
Yes, and many people do. Maps have included a wedding date still months away and a baby due the following year. Every map ends with a “to be continued” arrow, because the story is not finished.
Can we use it at our wedding?
Yes. Couples have printed it large as a welcome sign for guests to read, used it as a guest-book alternative, and printed small copies as bookmarks and favours. Because you own a print-ready file rather than a single poster, you can print it at more than one size.
Can I ask questions before I order?
Yes, and it is encouraged, especially if you are unsure whether your story will fit. Messages are usually answered within a few hours.
