Three things that are entirely in your hands
The map is built from the brief you write, so the reviews that describe maps

tend to come from briefs that did three
things well.
- Name every place. “The Alma Pub, Crystal Palace” becomes its own illustration. “where we met” becomes a generic building. This single habit makes more difference than anything else.
- Describe anything distinctive in a line. A stone barn with a red door, a 1970s VW camper, a black Newfoundland. A sentence is enough. There is no need to send photographs.
- Say which end of the style range you want. Some maps are open and doodle-like, others dense with architecture. The examples show both, deliberately. Naming your preference up front is the surest way to get the map you are picturing.
And send the stops in the order they happened. The map is a timeline, so the composition is drawn around that sequence: the revision round covers corrections and small details, not adding or removing a stop.
