Paper anniversary gifts under $50
In short
Under $50 is a good budget for a paper anniversary rather than a compromised one, because the material rewards effort over expense. The strongest options are free (something written), around $20 (a print, a newspaper from your wedding date, tickets) or around $49 (a custom illustrated map of your relationship).
Why this budget works for paper
Paper is the only material on the anniversary list where spending more does not reliably buy a better gift. A £500 leather item is better than a £50 one. A £500 piece of paper is not obviously better than a £5 one with the right words on it.
That makes the first anniversary the cheapest one to do well, and the easiest one to do badly, because a generic print at any price is still generic.

How to spend the printing budget well
If your gift is a file, the print is the last $10–30 and it is worth getting right.

- A print shop is usually cheaper than an online lab once shipping is counted, and it is same-day.

What not to buy under $50
- Anything “luxury” at this price. It will not be.
- Engraved anything where the engraving is just a name. A name is not a story.
- Novelty paper gifts. A paper wallet is a joke, and a joke is not a first anniversary.
- A blank journal. A journal with your first page already written is a gift; an empty one is homework.

For $0, write something. For $20, put something you already have in a good frame. For $49, have something made that could only be for them. All three beat a $200 gift with nothing specific in it.

Why is a love map a good paper anniversary gift?
The first wedding anniversary is traditionally marked with paper, and a printed map is literally paper, but it is paper with your own story on it rather than a card. That is why it is the shop’s most requested first-anniversary piece.
Does it only work for a first anniversary?
No. Maps have been made for 6th, 20th and 46th anniversaries, for engagements, elopements, weddings, Valentine’s Day, and as gifts from adult children to their parents and grandparents. Longer stories tend to make richer maps.
Can I include something that has not happened yet?
Yes, and many people do. Maps have included a wedding date still months away and a baby due the following year. Every map ends with a “to be continued” arrow, because the story is not finished.
Can we use it at our wedding?
