Styling

Framing it for your room

In short

Because the artwork is black on warm paper, it sits with almost any wall colour and the frame does the styling. Minimalist: thin black and premium matte. Scandinavian: oak and giclée. Boho: walnut or gold, and canvas works. Dark and moody: black with a mount.

Minimalist

Thin black, no mount, hung alone rather than in a group. The point of a minimal room is that each object has space, so resist making a gallery wall.

Print size matters more here than anywhere else: in a sparse room an undersized print looks lost. Go 40 × 60 cm or larger.

Scandinavian

Light oak against a white or pale grey wall, ideally with other wood in the room. This is the combination that appears in most of the styling photographs of this artwork, and it is the least likely to look dated in ten years.

A giclée print earns its cost here because the paper texture is visible in daylight, and Scandinavian rooms tend to have a lot of daylight.

Boho and earthy

Walnut, or a thin gold or brass profile. This is the one interior where a decorative frame improves the artwork rather than fighting it, because the room already has pattern and texture in it.

It is also the interior where unframed canvas genuinely works, no glass, no frame, softer edges, and it sits comfortably next to textiles and plants. Print one size up on canvas.

Dark and moody

Black frame with an off-white mount, against a deep wall colour: forest green, charcoal, oxblood. The mount is doing real work here: it separates the warm paper of the print from the dark wall, which otherwise makes the artwork look like a hole.

Use warm off-white for the mount, not bright white. Bright white next to warm paper makes the print look yellow.

Where to hang it

Living room. Above the sofa, centred, 20–25 cm above the back cushions. Two-thirds to three-quarters of the sofa’s width.

Bedroom. Above the headboard, or paired with a simple botanical or abstract print. Monochrome line art pairs well with one other quiet print and badly with three.

Hallway. At eye level, and consider non-reflective glass, hallways are usually the worst-lit and most reflective walls in a house.

Kitchen or dining room. Fine, and choose glass over acrylic; kitchens are greasier than people admit and glass wipes clean.

Pairing it with something else

If you want a pair, choose a second print that is quieter than the map, not busier. A single botanical line drawing, a plain typographic print, or an abstract in the same ink weight. Two detailed prints next to each other compete and neither wins.

Matching frames matter more than matching content. Two unrelated prints in identical frames read as a set; two related prints in different frames do not.
