Use case
A love map for Valentine's Day
In short
Valentine's Day rewards something specific, because the alternative is a category of gift everyone receives the same version of. A map of your own places is unrepeatable, and it works for couples at any stage, no anniversary or wedding required. Order by early February; the week before is the busiest of the year.
The Valentine’s problem
Almost every Valentine’s gift is a category rather than an object: flowers, chocolate, a dinner, jewellery. The recipient can tell which category it is before opening it, and so can everyone else who got the same thing that day.
A map of your specific places is not a category. It is either about you or it is nothing, which is why it lands differently.
One buyer wrote: “I gifted the love map to my partner on Valentine’s Day and he loved it. Ali took the time to ask for details to know more about our milestones to make the piece more personalised. My partner loved the little details!”
It works without a wedding
This is the practical difference from an anniversary map. There is no requirement for a proposal, a wedding or a house on it. Maps have opened with a dating app, a comedy club, a bandroom, a market and a university corridor.
Perfectly good five-stop Valentine’s maps exist: where you met, the first date, the first trip, the flat, and something still to come. Five is a real map, one delivered map has exactly five stops and a lot of white space, and it is one of the calmest ones.
How many milestones to choose covers this if your relationship is a year old rather than ten.
Timing, honestly
Late January or the first days of February is the right time to order. The map is drafted within 3 days and finished in 4–5, so allow a week including printing, and remember the run-up to the fourteenth is the busiest week of the year at every print shop.
| When you order | What is realistic |
|---|---|
| Late January | Everything, including a framer |
| 1–5 February | File in hand, print shop, off-the-shelf frame |
| 6–8 February | File in hand, same-day print shop, cheap frame |
| After 9 February | Choose something you can write or buy locally instead |
If you are already past the useful window, last-minute options covers what still works.
What to put on a Valentine’s map that you would not on an anniversary one
Anniversary maps tend to be milestone-shaped: engagement, wedding, house. A Valentine’s map can be smaller and stranger, which is usually better.
- The place you always get coffee
- The film you watched four times
- The takeaway you order without discussing it
- The walk you do when something needs talking about
- The trip you keep saying you will take
None of those are milestones. All of them are specific, which is the only quality that matters.
The one thing to get right
Do not put a quotation on it. The map is already about you; borrowed words about love are the fastest way to make a personalised gift generic. If you want words, put your own on it, a handwritten-style note can be lettered into the artwork at no extra cost.
Questions
Why is a love map a good paper anniversary gift?
The first wedding anniversary is traditionally marked with paper, and a printed map is literally paper, but it is paper with your own story on it rather than a card. That is why it is the shop’s most requested first-anniversary piece.
Does it only work for a first anniversary?
No. Maps have been made for 6th, 20th and 46th anniversaries, for engagements, elopements, weddings, Valentine’s Day, and as gifts from adult children to their parents and grandparents. Longer stories tend to make richer maps.
Can I include something that has not happened yet?
Yes, and many people do. Maps have included a wedding date still months away and a baby due the following year. Every map ends with a “to be continued” arrow, because the story is not finished.
Can we use it at our wedding?
Yes. Couples have printed it large as a welcome sign for guests to read, used it as a guest-book alternative, and printed small copies as bookmarks and favours. Because you own a print-ready file rather than a single poster, you can print it at more than one size.
Can I ask questions before I order?
Yes, and it is encouraged, especially if you are unsure whether your story will fit. Messages are usually answered within a few hours.
